” A Little Break” by John Baxter – Raising awareness of stomas

22 October, 2024

“In May 2023 I had my colon removed. The support I received from a number of individuals and agencies was incredible. I have written this play because I wanted to do something to contribute to Stoma Awareness”

‘A Little Break’ is a one-man play written and performed by John Baxter. It tells the story of Alan who is on a day trip to Fleetwood and, whilst there, he reflects on a particular event in his life, interwoven with his experience of illness and the treatment he underwent (spoiler alert: he has a stoma!) The story is fictional, but the details of the illness are autobiographical – all presented in a beautiful tableau, snapshots of a life remembered.

John has kindly agreed to share an audio recording of his play with Colostomy UK audiences – you can listen to it here: https://youtu.be/Ww-PBUuLNfQ?si=KYQHZnyKA9Ked5T0 (23 minutes long)

John also performs the play live and would be delighted to speak to anyone interested in arranging a performance for local groups and audiences (as well as having performed at the Salisbury Fringe, he has most recently been seen at the Wharf Theatre Devizes, and heard on Solent Radio, and he is equally at home performing to church social groups and WI audiences). He has previously followed it up with Q&A sessions, which have been very popular, and would only ask for a collection or donation for Colostomy UK in return for sharing his talent.
