At open days and patient events across the UK volunteers like Chris help new ostomates take their first steps towards living a full and active life. Being an open day volunteer is much more than just manning a stall. They must be knowledgeable about the help and services we provide, as well as being able to signpost people to other charities. They also have to work closely with stoma care nurses and be able to answer the variety of questions and concerns that new patients usually have.
Chris finds the role very rewarding, as it gives him the opportunity to pass on his experience to others. As he says ‘We were once new to managing a colostomy… there are lots of handy tips that can be passed on to others.’
