Air travel figures prominently in many peoples minds and we receive a huge number of enquiries on our Stoma Helpline from people about to go abroad for the first time since surgery. Because of this we have devoted considerable resources to engaging directly with the aviation industry.
Our role as a member of these forums is to influence and advise on everything from security procedures and policy to airport signage and toilet facilities. The aim of the forums is for continual improvement for the passenger journey. Supporting the airport to be a more inclusive and accessible organisation. Through the forum we collaborate with airport staff, contractors, individuals with lived experience of a disability, airlines and other charities.

We have also delivered training, supported various airlines and assisted travel organisations with their training videos (for example British Airways and ABM) to raise awareness about what a stoma is and people’s needs.
Our Chief Executive had also been involved for several years in the Civil Aviation Access to Travel panel. More recently she has worked with Customer Centric Consultancy in an advisory capacity to update the Persons with disabilities document for the Airports Council International. Shared and advised on the challenges people living with a stoma have been experiencing with the new security scanners at the Airport Security Group. She has also been invited to a number of sessions with the new Department for Transport Aviation Accessibility Task and Finish Group that launched in November 2024.
